The Power of Visual Learning

As we know both long and short-term memory store important information in ones brain, with the former being somewhat more limited than the latter. One of the simplest ways to ensure that children correctly store information in their long-term memory is by pairing it up with meaningful pictures!

Images or visual aids help children interpret and make sense of the content at hand in a more effective way. Words are processed by our short-term memory, where as we know, only small bits of information is retained. By combining words and pictures the information being studied has a greater chance shifting into the long-term memory, where it can be recalled at a later stage when the correct stimuli are presented. Stimuli are made up of the various links that each individual makes use of to understand and remember topics or work that is being discussed. Therefore for every individual the stimuli will be somewhat different. Making use of Visual Learning allows children to sort through various connections, explore what makes most sense to them and pair up that stimuli with the content in discussion.

Lessons based around works of art have many benefits for both students and teachers (Teaching English, 2011). Interpreting and responding to art can be both entertaining and interesting, leading on to fun activities that can be enjoyed by the whole classroom. Making use of Art, according to Teaching English (2011), can introduce a change of pace into the classroom. Having kids use their imagination and create art or pictures based on a new work topic at hand, increases direct links into their long-term memory, allowing a greater chance of remembering what the topic was all about at a later stage.

Allowing children the freedom of exploring their own connections to the topic, reiterates an inductive process, where by learners seek patterns and link these up to identify broader significance and meaning to the topic at hand.  As apposed to providing boundaries to the children’s development process, this enables each individual to develop in their own unique way.  

Thinking about drawing pictures or creating art can be very motivating for individuals. As mentioned by Teaching English (2011):

“It can take the emphasis off of accuracy and put it onto fluency and the ability to clearly express thoughts and ideas. This is great for students whose progress in speaking is hindered by a fear of making mistakes.”




At Perivoli Country School we want to embrace the importance of Art in the learning development of our children. By providing weekly topics of discussion and having the children interpret what they’ve understood about the topic in the form of art or pictures, we believe will not only add a fun and colourful project to our classroom but also provide the children with the best chance of developing their personalities as well as their unique thinking skills.


All children love to play with colours, no matter the medium that’s available; be it paint, crayons, chalk or even clay. Once the children set out on their journey of creating their own personal 'art piece', they get so involved in the process that they don’t even realize they are learning English at the same time (Busy Teacher, 2016).
